Fundamentals of Vibration Analysis

April 10, 2026

Predictive maintenance starts with a simple question: what does a healthy machine sound like? Every rotating component produces a characteristic vibration spectrum — bearings, gears, and shafts each leave their own recurring frequency signature.

When that pattern changes — for example, a new frequency spike at twice the shaft speed — it often signals an emerging fault long before it becomes audible or noticeable by touch. Frequency analysis (FFT) makes these changes visible and helps narrow down which component is affected.

Combined with historical measurement series, this makes it possible not just to detect that damage is developing, but to estimate how much time remains before a critical condition is reached.
