Contact Potential Difference, Explained

March 25, 2026

Bring two different metals into contact and a tiny electric current briefly flows — an effect most people only remember from physics class, but one with measurable, technically useful consequences.

The cause is the difference in work function between the two materials: the energy an electron needs to leave the surface. The resulting charge transfer settles into a stable electric field at the interface — the contact potential difference.

VIBE-EX deliberately harnesses that field to shift material properties such as elastic modulus and natural frequency — with no chemical or mechanical intervention on the component itself.
